Therapy for Healing Parental, Adult Child, and Family Estrangement
Supporting Repair When Possible – Boundaries When Necessary
Family estrangement is one of the most painful and misunderstood experiences a person can endure.
Whether you are a parent who has been suddenly cut off, or an adult child struggling with distance, resentment, or guilt, estrangement often reflects unhealed wounds, not a lack of love.
My work is not about forcing reconciliation. It’s about discernment, healing, and repair when possible – and peace when it is not.
A Nuanced Approach to Estrangement
In recent years, estrangement has often been oversimplified online.
Some voices frame all parental relationships as inherently harmful, while others minimize the very real damage caused by abuse, addiction, narcissism, or neglect.
The truth lives in the both/and.
- Some relationships must remain distant for safety and psychological stability
- Many relationships can be repaired with boundaries, accountability, and guided communication
- And many families are stuck in rupture simply because no one was taught how to repair
Estrangement should never be used as punishment, avoidance, or leverage. But neither should repair be rushed when wounds are still open.
How I Help Parents
Parents who experience estrangement often feel shock, grief, confusion, shame, and helplessness. Many were not abusive, yet are labeled “toxic” without context or opportunity for growth.
In our work together, I help parents:
- Process the grief and trauma of being cut off
- Understand generational patterns and blind spots without self-blame
- Learn how to take responsibility without over-functioning or collapsing
- Develop emotionally safe, non-defensive communication
- Set compassionate boundaries that honor both dignity and self-respect
- Prepare for repair – or find peace if reconciliation is not currently possible
Healing for parents is not about chasing or convincing. It’s about becoming emotionally regulated, grounded, and available without abandoning yourself.

How I Help Adult Children
Adult children often carry deep resentment, unmet needs, and nervous-system activation rooted in childhood dynamics. Sometimes estrangement is protective and necessary. Other times, it is a trauma response mistaken for empowerment.
I help adult children:
- Clarify whether distance is about safety or unresolved pain
- Differentiate boundaries from emotional cut-off
- Heal trauma bonds, parentification, and emotional neglect
- Work with anger, grief, loyalty binds, and guilt
- Learn how to express needs without defensiveness or withdrawal
- Explore whether repair is possible – and what repair would actually require
True healing is not erasing the past. It’s learning how to be in relationship without losing yourself.
The Modalities I Use
My approach integrates:
- Internal Family Systems (IFS / Parts Work) to heal wounded child parts, protectors, and legacy burdens
- Somatic and nervous-system regulation to reduce fight/flight/freeze responses that block repair
- Trauma-informed attachment work
- Transgenerational healing
- Compassion-based boundary setting and guided repair conversations
This work is gentle, deep, and paced. No one is pushed into contact before their system is ready.
Repair Is Sacred – But Not Always Immediate
Some relationships heal slowly. Some require long pauses. Some may never return to what they once were.
The goal is not reunion at all costs. The goal is clarity, integrity, and emotional freedom – for parents and adult children alike.
If you’re navigating estrangement and want support rooted in nuance, compassion, and real clinical depth, you do not have to do this alone.
